An Interview with Kelsey Riggs

In the bustling heart of Bismarck State College, a hidden world exists - a realm filled with stories, adventures, and countless perspectives. This is the library, a sanctuary where students escape the pressures of academia and immerse themselves in the written word. But what kind of books are these students gravitating towards? To find out, we spoke with Kelsey Riggs, a librarian at BSC, who shed light on the reading habits of the college's diverse student body.

Riggs revealed that true crime, thrillers, and fantasy genres are particularly popular among BSC students. These books offer a mix of excitement, suspense, and escapism, providing a much-needed break from the demands of academic life. However, the library caters to a wide range of reading tastes, ensuring that there's something for everyone.

To encourage students to read, the library offers a variety of services and programs. These include author visits, book clubs, and access to online resources like Libby and Comics Plus. By providing opportunities for students to engage with authors and connect with other readers, the library fosters a love of reading and creates a welcoming atmosphere.

Riggs also emphasized the library's commitment to student-centered services. The library is always open to suggestions from students and makes efforts to ensure that requested materials are readily available. Students can even request new books and materials through the library's online services.

When asked about the motivations behind students' reading choices, Riggs noted, “Many students read for pleasure and escapism. The world within a book can offer a much-needed escape from the challenges of everyday life.”

While the library strives to make books easily accessible, students may occasionally face challenges. One common issue is limited availability of popular titles, especially when multiple students want to read the same book. However, the library works to address these challenges and ensure that students can access the materials they need.

The library plays a vital role in shaping students' reading experiences and academic success. By providing a diverse collection of books and supporting programs, the library encourages students to explore new ideas, develop critical thinking skills, and broaden their horizons. As Riggs noted, "The library is a resource available to everyone, and I encourage students to take advantage of what we have to offer."
