New Dean Takes the Helm at BSC

sophiefailure21

Imagine a vibrant, bustling campus, filled with students eager to explore the world of ideas. Dr. Kim Weismann, a seasoned educator with a passion for fostering intellectual growth, is poised to guide this intellectual journey as the new Dean of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences at Bismarck State College. Succeeding the late Dr. Amy Juhala, Weismann brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to student success to her new position.

Weismann's career in higher education has been marked by a dedication to both teaching and leadership. Before joining BSC, she served in various roles at Williston State College, including Professor of Communication, Chair of the Arts and Human Sciences Department, and Faculty Senate President. These experiences have equipped her with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing students and faculty in the humanities, arts, and sciences.

As Dean, Weismann is determined to create a thriving and dynamic division where students can not only acquire essential knowledge but also develop critical thinking skills and a lifelong love of learning. Her vision for the Humanities, Arts, and Sciences department is one of innovation, inclusivity, and student success.

"I see my job as being one where I can help others," Weismann said. "I want to ensure that students are successful in their courses and that our instructors have the resources and support they need to teach effectively."

Weismann's appointment comes during a significant growth phase for BSC. As the college expands its offerings, her leadership will ensure that Humanities, Arts, and Sciences remain at the forefront of academic excellence. "I enjoy helping people," she shares about her passion for education administration. "I like helping students and instructors." This dedication sets a positive tone for her leadership approach.

When asked how her previous roles shaped her leadership style, Weismann reflects on her extensive experience managing teams while working closely with students in classrooms. "I can take those experiences and use them here at BSC," she explains.

Her vision includes enhancing educational experiences through innovative methods like hands-on learning opportunities — such as anatomage tables in anatomy classes — allowing students to engage deeply with their studies.

Inclusivity is another cornerstone of Weismann's mission. She believes every student should have access to resources that support their learning journey. "I sit on the student assistance team to ensure students who need extra help receive it," she states emphatically.

Weismann also emphasizes collaboration with faculty and staff: "Most faculty know they can come by my office anytime." Open communication fosters an environment where everyone feels heard — a vital aspect of building a supportive academic community.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords for Weismann; they are integral parts of her strategy. She actively participates in committees focused on embracing diversity at BSC. "It's important that everyone has a voice," she asserts.

As part of BSC's polytechnic mission — providing hands-on education for workforce readiness — Weismann sees Humanities, Arts, and Sciences contributing significantly through experiential learning in music, art, theater, and more.

So, what does the future hold? "We're exploring new ideas for programs," says Weismann enthusiastically about anticipated enrollment growth and community needs in workforce development.

To ensure student success within this dynamic environment, she prioritizes feedback from surveys conducted each semester: "We're always looking at details...to improve."

Reflecting on rewarding moments in her career so far —including earning full professor status — Weismann emphasizes relationship-building with colleagues as equally fulfilling: “Hard work pays off.”

Balancing professional responsibilities with personal life is another priority for Weismann; she cherishes time spent with family — including eight rescue animals — ensuring that home life remains fulfilling alongside work commitments.

For students aspiring toward careers in education administration, Weismann offers sage advice: “Seek leadership opportunities,” she encourages passionately. “Communication classes are invaluable.”

Dr. Kim Weismann's appointment as Dean of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences at Bismarck State College marks a new era of intellectual growth and innovation. With her dedication, experience, and visionary leadership, she is poised to guide the division toward a bright, exciting future filled with innovation, inclusivity, and endless possibilities, where students are empowered to become critical thinkers, engaged citizens, and successful professionals.
